WMBF News reports that LAKE CITY, SC (WMBF) - Former Lake City police chief resigned on Monday, but the sister of a 2020 murder victim says a resignation is not enough.

Krisell Pendergrass has been voicing her concerns about Patrick Miles’ leadership for years following the shooting death of her brother, Antwan McKnight “I am fighting for justice for my brother Antwan McKnight,” Pendergrass said.

“For years I stood before this body and raised concerns about Chief Patrick Miles, his leadership, his conduct, and the handling of serious matters.” Previously, Pendergrass and her family, joined by advocate John Barnette, held a press conference outside the Lake City Police Department and called for Miles’ resignation.

The family has alleged that Miles mishandled the investigation into McKnight’s murder in 2020.

“He wasn’t doing his job,” Pendergrass claimed.

“I just want them to own up to how they handled my brother’s case.” Miles submitted a resignation letter on Monday, writing, “I have made the difficult decision to retire/resign and pursue the next chapter of my life and career.” In a statement to WMBF, Barnette questioned why a department leader would step down, theorizing that Miles did so due to some pressure.
