WMBF News reports that HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - With drought conditions continuing in Horry County, fire officials are urging people to skip personal-use fireworks and leave holiday shows to the professionals.

Horry County Fire Rescue officials said vegetation across the region is very dry, and ignition sources of all kinds could potentially spark the next major wildfire, putting lives and property at risk.

“Fireworks are unpredictable,” the agency said, adding that firing them off during the current dry conditions is “very risky.” Officials said opting for professional fireworks shows can help minimize the chance of traumatic injuries and reduce fire danger.

Fire rescue officials also noted that fewer fires mean fewer emergency responses for crews during the holiday week.

“Your cooperation and understanding are appreciated,” Horry County Fire Rescue said.

“We’ll get to the other side of this extremely dry patch of weather, together.” The Myrtle Beach Police Department reminded the public that fireworks may only be discharged within city limits on private property between 7 a.m.
