WMBF News reports that SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Surfside Beach Town Council reviewed official renderings for a new courthouse and council chamber, moving the project closer to construction on the site of the original town hall.
The original Surfside Beach Town Hall was demolished in 2023 after an inspection found extensive mold and structural issues in the building.
Site plans show the proposed one-floor building would feature a large council chamber with a larger capacity for people to attend meetings, addressing an issue with current meetings held in the civic center.
The room would also be used as the courtroom.
The building would include a conference room that would be used for jury deliberation and the town clerk’s office.
Mayor Robert Krouse said the building’s design is meant to fit the beach aesthetic Surfside Beach is known for, similar to the firehouse.
