WMBF News reports that MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The state is stepping in to run the Marlboro County School District after years of financial mismanagement laid bare by a new Inspector General report.
State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver’s request for the South Carolina Department of Education to assume this control was unanimously approved in a vote Tuesday afternoon.
Weaver said the district, which serves roughly 3,183 students across eight schools, cannot afford another year of instability.
This vote comes a day after a scathing report from the SC State Inspector General was released.
The report found that the district had repeatedly failed at fiscal management, procurement compliance, financial oversight, and governance and had failed to meaningfully implement its own fiscal emergency turnaround plan.
