WMBF News reports that (WCSC) — South Carolina lawmakers have approved a bill requiring restaurants to tell customers whether the shrimp they serve is domestic or imported.
The legislation follows what has been called “shrimpgate,” in which dozens of Lowcountry restaurants were accused of misleading customers about the origin of their shrimp.
The vote on June 25 marked the third time the House has considered the labeling requirements.
4248, restaurants must include the information on their menu, post a sign at the entrance, or do both.
Food establishments, defined as restaurants, cafeterias, food stands and trucks or any place “engaged in the business of selling ready-to-eat food to the public,” must note whether the shrimp they serve is sourced from U.S.
That notation will appear as a disclaimer on menus, as a sign at the restaurant’s main entrance, or both.
