WMBF News reports that HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Smoke may be visible along a stretch of Highway 707 in Horry County after crews traced reports to a recent contained woods fire.

Horry County Fire Rescue said crews were dispatched Thursday morning to the area of Highway 707 near McDowell Shortcut Road for a reported smoke investigation.

Fire officials said the smoke was coming from a recent woods fire that is well contained within fire breaks, but is still smoldering and at times producing significant amounts of visible smoke along Highway 707.

Fire rescue officials said smoldering, flare-ups, and smoke are expected to continue until the area receives a significant amount of rain, which they said will be the only way to fully extinguish the fires.

Horry County Fire Rescue thanked Horry County 911 for fielding calls about the smoke and said crews will continue monitoring the area and respond as needed.
