WMBF News reports that GRAND STRAND, SC (WMBF) - Sea turtle nests are appearing across Grand Strand beaches as nesting season continues, with volunteers reporting a significant increase in activity compared to last year.

The South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts, known as SCUTE, found 70 nests in May across the 13 beaches it monitors in Horry and Georgetown counties.

South Carolina had 989 nests at this point last year and has over 1,500 this year, according to Rick Scott, head of SCUTE.

SCUTE works with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to check beaches, including Litchfield and Myrtle Beach, for new nests, monitoring, protecting, and gathering DNA from each one.
