S.C. drought forces river residents and tourists to change holiday plans

WMBF News reports that - A severe drought in South Carolina is forcing residents along the river to abandon their traditional holiday weekend plans and seek water elsewhere.

Lou Martin, who lives along the river, said her family will travel to the other side of the island for the upcoming July 4th weekend instead of staying near their home.

She said ”We will just be driving away to the other side of the island cause there’s no way we can go on the boat to the bend we normally go.” Martin said.

The drought is affecting more than recreation.

Nelson Roberts, an agricultural technician with the USDA who covers ten counties, said the drought is significant in many different areas.

I see a lot of center pit irrigation and their crops look good.
