WMBF News reports that Jim Clyburn secured the Democratic nomination as he seeks his 18th term in the U.S.

Clyburn beat out challenger Frederick Goodwin in Tuesday’s primary election, with The Associated Press calling the race just after 7:45 p.m.

“If reelected, I promise to fight against the forces of retrogression, continue standing up for the values and interests that matter most to all South Carolinians, and continue our pursuit towards a more perfect Union,” Clyburn said in a statement issued late Tuesday.

He’ll now face Republican challenger John Peterson in November.

Peterson also won his primary on Tuesday, defeating Maurice Washington.
