WMBF News reports that — A red sponge-like substance in the water is interfering with fishing and swimming along Grand Strand beaches.
The substance has been spotted in places like Garden City and Atlantic Beach for a few days.
Fishermen say it gets stuck on fishing hooks, and swimmers say they cannot avoid it.
Brian Rowsey, owner of the Dirty Myrtle Shark Fishing Company, said the substance is affecting his business.
“It’s affecting the business; you know you go out,” Rowsey said.
“You can make $300-$900 a day depending on how many groups you have going with you.
