WMBF News reports that MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A loggerhead sea turtle laid 111 eggs in Myrtle Beach early Tuesday, marking the city’s fourth sea turtle nest of the season, according to the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
Police said the turtle nested around 5 a.m.
after several false crawls last week.
False crawls happen when a female sea turtle comes ashore but does not find a suitable place to lay her eggs.
Volunteers relocated the eggs to a more secluded area of the Grand Strand, where they will be protected during incubation.
“Thank you to the volunteers who continue to play a vital role in protecting these incredible animals and ensuring future generations of sea turtles have a chance to thrive along our coastline,” the department said.
