A new state law will soon abolish partisan elections in two South Carolina cities — but city officials said they weren’t told about the law until it was passed.

Florence’s mayor said she learned of the bill the day it was signed into law.

The new requirement, tucked into a broad election-related bill, mandates cities above 39,000 people to hold nonpartisan races starting next year.

That includes two cities: Greenville and Florence.
