WMBF News reports that MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Beachgoers in Myrtle Beach are being reminded to swim near a lifeguard whenever entering the water as strong rip currents become more frequent in the area.
Lifeguard stands placed every 150 yards Lifeguard stands are positioned up and down the beach approximately every 150 yards to cover as much of the shoreline as possible.
Officials say beachgoers should also check flag colors at those stands before entering the water.
The city has also placed new signs at all beach accesses displaying flag colors and beach rules, according to Matt Warne, general manager of Lack’s Beach Service.
“The city has put up all new signs at all beach accesses which show the colors of the flags and show the beach rules,” Warne said.
“The biggest thing, especially when it comes to the water and water safety, is waist-to-chest deep.” Officials say the two hours before and two hours after low tide are the most dangerous, and that is typically when lifeguards see the most rescues.
