WMBF News reports that HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A Horry County woman is facing charges in the death of a child, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

SLED charged Makiah Long, 22, with homicide by child abuse and two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child on Thursday, an agency news release said.

Warrants state a 2-year-old child was taken to McLeod Florence Hospital on March 17 with injuries, including bleeding on both sides of the brain (bilateral subdural hematomas), a large swelling or bruise on the forehead and bruising.

The child later died on March 20, according to the warrants.

Investigators said family members reported the child appeared normal earlier that morning with no visible signs of injury, and that Long provided multiple inconsistent statements about how the child was hurt, the warrants allege.

The unlawful conduct charges also reference prior injuries to children in the home, including previous unexplained fractures documented in medical records, according to the warrants.
