WMBF News reports that HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Highway 501 widening project, now approaching two years of construction, could be finished later this year, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
The project began in 2024 as a partnership between SCDOT and the Horry County RIDE 3 Program.
The goal is to expand the number of lanes along the corridor from four to six, running north and south.
Jennifer Timmons, SCDOT’s director of media relations, said crews have been focused on removing and replacing asphalt.
“The latest work has been removing the old asphalt and putting new asphalt down, making it a smoother ride, especially when you have to widen those lanes,” Timmons said.
“The dirt has already been dug up for that, and measurements have already been made.
