WMBF News reports that GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Georgetown County Emergency Management has received a grant to help prepare for hurricanes and flooding.

The $5,000 comes from the Duke Energy Foundation’s 2026 Helping Emergency Response Organizations Grant Program.

It’s one of 34 awards totaling $500,000 distributed statewide to nonprofits and government agencies this year.

The county says it plans to use the funds to buy supplies for rapid distribution sites, including traffic control equipment, safety gear, and material handling tools.

The equipment will help officials quickly set up locations to distribute water, food, and other emergency supplies during disasters.

“Georgetown County is extremely vulnerable to hurricanes and flooding, and the ability to quickly stand up Points of Distribution is critical in the early hours of a disaster response,” said Georgetown County Emergency Manager Loren Wallace.
