WMBF News reports that MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of risks that can come from fake traffic stops.

The issue arose after a driver posted on social media, claiming they were stopped by two people posing as officers in the county’s Clio area.

In the investigation into the incident, the sheriff’s office says the driver admitted the incident did not happen.

Alex Williams with the sheriff’s office says people impersonating law enforcement and conducting fake traffic stops are not uncommon in the state and the country.

“Individuals impersonating police officers are a hazard to public safety, you know, on so many different levels,” Williams said.

And he warns of the potential dangers such situations can pose to drivers.
