WMBF News reports that LONGS, SC (WMBF) - Nearly half of South Carolina is now in a severe drought, with 43% of the state affected.

The lack of rain is drying up ponds, lakes, and rivers across the state, with many rivers sitting at their lowest points.

The Pee Dee, Little Pee Dee, and Waccamaw rivers are now among the lowest in the state.

The Waccamaw River in Longs is down to about 1% of normal flow.

With low levels, hidden hazards are suddenly exposed, like tree stumps and sandbars that can cause damage to boaters.

Noah DeHaven, a kayak guide with River Island Adventures in Longs, said he hasn’t seen the water this low in the five years he’s worked there.
