Atlantic Beach certifies 2023 mayoral election after Supreme Court order

WMBF News reports that MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Atlantic Beach has officially certified the results of its November 2023 mayoral election following more than two years of legal battles.

The town’s Municipal Election Commission certified the results Monday after the South Carolina Supreme Court ordered it to declare Josephine Isom the winner.

Isom and challenger John David faced off in the Nov.

But after the commission accepted 18 provisional ballots, 16 of which went to David, and flipped the results: David 65, Isom 64.

Isom filed an election protest, arguing several votes were cast by non-residents.

The commission agreed, ruling that 14 votes were fraudulent, but refused to certify the election, saying it could not determine which candidate received the invalid votes.
