WMBF News reports that ATLANTIC BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Several people came together on Saturday to make the beach and ocean an inclusive space for people with disabilities.

Atlantic Beach leaders, the Adaptive Surf Project, 76 surfers and over 140 volunteers gathered for the third annual Wheel to Surf.

The event used beach matting, beach wheelchairs, and adaptive surf equipment to help participants with water activities like surfing and kayaking.

“Everyone’s here to help, and there’s plenty of equipment and chairs for everyone, so it’s great,” said Amanda Giggi, whose daughter Hannah participated for the first time.

Giggi said the event has been a wonderful experience for both her and her daughter, despite initial nerves.

Wheel to Surf is part of the Adaptive Surf Project’s broader mission to advocate for beach wheelchairs and beach matting to be made accessible at all beaches across the Grand Strand.
