WYFF 4 reports that The Clinton baseball team defeated Atlantic Collegiate 5-4 in 8 innings on Friday night to win the 2A baseball state championship.
The win is Clinton's second in the last four years, with the Red Devils also winning a title in 2023.The Red Devils took a 1-0 lead in the first after Luke Young hit a sacrifice fly.Atlantic Collegiate tied the game in the second, but in the bottom of the third, Clinton scored two runs — one off a wild pitch and another after a sacrifice fly.
The Red Devils added another run in the 5th inning to go up 4-1.But at the top of the 6th inning, Atlantic Collegiate tied the game.
It was tied 4-4 after the 7th inning, so it went to extras.In the bottom of the 8th inning, Young, who had 12 home runs on the season (a Clinton single-season record) launched his 13th home run of the year to power the Red Devils to a 5-4 walk-off victory."It's unbelievable," Young said.
"Before the at-bat, I looked at the dugout, everyone was jumping up and down, telling me I got it.
Everyone in the stands was on their feet.
